As people moved away from cocktails toward coffee, J. Stuart Foote was there to meet the new demand, and named himself the inventor of the coffee table. Until Mr. Foote’s company - the Imperial Furniture Company - began mass producing this newly needed furniture, ordinary citizens were relegated to sawing the legs of higher tables to bring them down to the appropriate height. Despite its relatively recent beginning, the coffee table quickly gained popularity in the American home.
Even though its design is actually relatively new to the home decor scene, the coffee table is without a doubt the centerpiece of the living room. Whether it bears a vase with a lovely display of flowers or greenery, an array of magazines for the perusal of guests and family, or simply a few unobtrusive sets of coasters; this is where the focus of the living room rests. It may be the place where children color, the location of a family game night, or just - as its name suggests - a resting place for coffee mugs while old friends catch up on the goings on of their daily lives.
The next proposed element you should consider are accent tables. These don‘t serve any particular function except they are available when needed. They can be used for dining, double as a small coffee table and be moved into whatever location when needed. These tables come in petite sizes, some stack-able and some large, aren‘t very expensive and add a whole other dimension to a room. They can direct traffic flow at a party or act as art for the room.
