While the coffee table may seem like it has always been a part of home decor, they actually did not come into use in the American home until the 1920s. While coffee lovers in England was active in coming up with furniture pieces to facilitate a coffee shop type atmosphere, their solution was a table that still stood at about 27 inches tall. The much shorter coffee table height of 18-20 inches which has now become "standard," came into play when the prohibition of the 1920s changed the focus of the home entertainment scene.
Just remember no room is complete without a sofa table regardless of the type of sofa you have because the empty space will seem incomplete. Console tables, sofa tables and other tables are a mark of distinction. Never be convinced that the need for paying attention to this design feature should go unnoticed. Think how much design depth you‘d have with accent tables, complimenting the sofa, drapes, rugs and table lamps. If you want to lighten up your decor a glass top coffee table is a perfect choice. It makes a striking component because of its ability to reflect light into a darker room. Couple this with an end table with the appropriate height, width and size and brightens an unattractive space will be the result.
Types and Dimensions: The more popular type of large wooden coffee tables are generally made of mahogany, pinewood or oak with the tops coming in glass or marble available in the traditional square, round or rectangular shapes. The larger ones have dimensions of 840mm wide, 280mm high and 40mm deep and are large enough to hold a full tray of coffee as well as magazines and newspapers. Some of the much larger wooden coffee tables can be used even as a cabinet or side table and has the capacity to hold a number of items.
